Bayside Juniors Largest Contingent at BC Junior Provincial Championships
The Bayside Club sent 26 Junior Squash Players to the BC Junior Squash Championships held last weekend at the Hollyburn Club on the North Shore. 9 more than the next largest group, with 6 of the 26 making it to the winners circle. The Bayside group was again led again by Rafik Bhaloo winning the tough U15 division, followed closely by Kathryn Milligan who finished 2nd in the U11, Carly Soparlo with third in the U 13 and Lewis Lees Buckley 4th in the U17. Consolation winners and 5th place overall, included Mark Saunders and Stuart Akam in the U13 and 15, while Jessica Soparlo finished first over sister Lisa in the U 15 B division. Special Plate winners were Ciara Heuser and Matt Frost in the U13 and U15. Other finalists in their various divisions included Alex Lees-Buckley, John Gillard, Robert Hill, and Doug Smith, while Toby King, Layne Mullard, Archie Heuser, Lewis Seimplekamp, Brett Hinchcliff, Daniel Szetela, and Thomas Archdeakin all reached their respective Semi finals.
Bayside’s 50 plus juniors are also competing in Bayside’s Junior and Open Club Championships over the next couple of weeks with the Open Finals on April 16th in the evening and Junior Finals in the late afternoon of the 14th and on the17th from 12-2 pm. All three events are open to the public, call Tim at 943-0151 for full details.

Club Championships
This years Club Championships will run from April 2 through 16th. (no matches schedueled over the Easter Weekend) Registration deadline is March 29th Cost 5$ signup sheet behind court 1.

This event has divisions for all levels of players and is a great chance for you to play people you might otherwise not. I highly recommend it for everyone especially those of you looking for new people to play. Thanks Tim

Bayside’s Bhaloo Brothers Beat Best
Rahim and Rafik Bhaloo both won their Divisions over the last weekend in the US National Squash Championships in Seattle. Competing against the best in North America Rahim won the 2.5 Division while Rafik won the 3.0. Also competing for Bayside was Matt Saunders who lost in the quarter-finals of the 4.5 to the eventual winner after defeating the number 3 seed in the second round. Bayside will be returning to Seattle next weekend for the Seattle Junior Open with acontingent of 8 Juniors looking for more gold.

Bayside Results at River Club St Patricks Tourney


The Bayside Club sent six juniors, six women and Peter Casey to the annual St Patrick’s Day Squash tourney at the River Club in Richmond. Of the 13 strong contingent 8 reached their respective finals with 5 finishing first. Leading the group was Rahim Bhaloo winning the Men’s D event. Also winning in their respective consolation finals were; Matt and Sarah Saunders in the Men’s A and Ladies B events, Stuart Akam in the men’s C and Debbie Hlady in the D. Not far behind the winners group were consolation finalists Mary Smith in the ladies A, Toby King in the men’s D and Debbie Porter reaching the ladies D finals in her first tournament. Reaching the semi-final stages in the ladies A and D events were Julie Gillis and Debbie Forsythe, who was also playing in her first tourney. Rounding out the Bayside contingent was Peter Casey and Joan Hunter playing in the men’s and ladies A Division and Mark Saunders, the youngest participant, in the Men’s D. Bayside’s busiest stretch of the season continues with Matt Saunders traveling to Seattle this weekend to compete in the US Nationals, followed by a group of Bayside’s younger juniors also traveling to Seattle the following weekend for the annual Seattle Junior Open.

Bayside Juniors Travel to BC WinterGames

Last weekend The Bayside Club sent 9 Juniors to compete on three different Zone Teams at the BC Winter Games in Port Alberni. Bayside supplied the entire squad for Zone 4, Delta, Richmond, & Burnaby for the first time since the games began. The team comprised of Stuart Akam, Toby King, Archie Heuser and Carly, Lisa, and Jessica Soparlo lost only to the teams from the much larger Zones of Vancouver and Vancouver Island and finished the weekend defeating the Zone 8 team from Northern BC to bring home Bronze medals. Also representing Bayside was Rafik Bhaloo who played in the number two position on the Gold Medal Zone 5, (Vancouver) Team not droping a single game throughout the weekend. Baysides representation was rounded out by Layne Mullard and Zac Owen, who played in the number one and two positions for the Zone 3, (Fraser Valley Team). Next up for the Bayside Juniors is the Squash BC Provincial Championships to be held at the Arbutus Club where 7 of the Clubs Juniors will be testing themselves against BC’s best players of all ages.

Bayside Juniors Spend Weekend In Victoria
Bayside sent 10 of its top Junior Squash Players to compete with 175 of the best Squash players from The Prairies, Washington State and the Yukon at the Pacific Northwest Junior Squash Championships recently held in Victoria. Bayside's results were once again highlighted by the performance of brother/sister team Lewis Lees-Buckley and Alex. Alex finished in third place overall in the Girls under 13 Main event while Lewis won the Boys under 17 consolation event. Also bringing home a trophy was Layne Mullard with the Boys under 13 consolation plate prize, while teammate Mark Saunders, also playing in the Under 13 main event finished in the semi-finals of the consolation. Meanwhile Bayside’s largest contingent—5 Under 15 Boys were led by Rafik Bhaloo who finished in fourth place overall, followed by Stuart Akam who reached the Plate final, Toby King the main consolation final, and David Lewis and Matt Frost finishing 3rd and 4th in the B pool. Rounding out the Bayside contingent was Rahim Bhaloo finishing third over all in the Under 19 B event. Next up for the Bayside team is the BC Winter Games in Port Alberni. Bayside players Stuart Akam, Toby King, Archie Heuser, Carly, Lisa and Jessica Soparlo will make up 100% of the Zone 4-Burnaby,Richmond,Delta Team. While teammates Rakik Bhaloo will be competing on the Zone 5-Vancouver team and Layne Mullard, and Zach Owen will be playing on the Zone 3-Fraser Valley Team.

Ladies Squash
Our Monday morning Ladies Squash program will resume Monday February the 23rd 10-12. The program is designed for beginner/intermediate players and is avalible to members and nonmmembers. Tim provides some coaching and runs drills for the first hour (cost of 5$) followed by games from 11-12. **there is no charge for members wishing to come down from 11-12 just for the games portion.

Baysides Pilates class has room for 1 or 2 participants. The class is held every Wednesday at 1-2pm until March 3rd. Dropin cost $5 members and $8 for nonmembers.

BC Open Championships
The Bayside Club recently sent 10 members to the BC Open Squash Championships, four adults and six juniors, with four of the juniors reaching their respective finals. Leading the group was Rafik Bhaloo defeating teammate Stuart Akam in the Mens C consulation final, while Archie Heuser and Mark Saunders both reached the finals in the Mens D main and consulation events respectively. Rounding out the junior side were Toby King and Rahim Bhaloo both reaching the semi-finals of the Mens D. Leading the adult contingent was Bruce Matthews advancing to the A semi-finals, while Baysides only female entrant Mary Smith reached the Ladies A quarter-finals. Also reaching the quarter finals in their respective divisions were Matt Saunders in the Mens A, Peter Casey in the 50 division,and . Next on Baysides competitive calendar is the Pacific Northwest Championships in Victoria.

Bayside Dominates In Burnaby
Bayside’s Junior Squash program sent a team of 16 players to the 4th annual Bonsor Junior Tourney, providing 50% of the 32 player draw from around BC and brought home 8 medals. Leading the group was Brock Edinger winning the U13 Novice division. Followed closely by John Gillard winning the U15 B consolation in his first event, Douglas Smith the U13B, and Chris Kinsey the U 13Novice consolation. Second place finishers included 13 year old Archie Heuser in the U17B event, 8 year old Katherine Milligan in the U13 Novice, Alex Lees Buckley and Remmington both in the U13B, Daniel Szetela in the U13 novice, and Robert Hill in the U13B consolation. Third place finishes went to Mark Saunders and Ciara Heuser in the U13B, Brett Hinchcliff in the U13 Novice, Justin Keilinski in the U13 novice consolation and Zac Owen in the U 15 B consolation.
This coming weekend 6 of Baysides top junors will be competing with the top Adults from the Pacific Northwest at the BC Open, hosted by the Jericho Tennis & Squash Club.

Bayside Juniors Clean Up In Victoria
The Bayside Club recently sent 9 players to the 5th annual KSR Junior Squash tournament in Victoria. Leading the pack were Sarah Saunders-1st overall Girl and Carly Soparlo, winning the Girls B division, defeating girls up to 6 years her senior. Also finishing first was 13 year old Toby King with a decisive win in the Boys Under 17 B division. Other impressive finishes included 14 year old Stuart Akam finishing second in his Under 19 Invitational pool, along with 12 year olds Layne Mullard and Mark Saunders taking second in their respective U 15 B pools, and 13 year old Archie Heuser second in the U 17 B. Rounding out the Bayside group was Max McLaughlin and Rahim Bhaloo finishing second and third in the under 19 novice and B divisions respectively. Next up for Bayside’s Juniors is the Bonsor Junior B & Novice event to be held the last weekend of the month in Burnaby.

Bayside Juniors Compete in Canadian Junior Open
Five of Baysides top Junior players recently traveled to Niagara to compete in the Junior Canadian Open Squash Championships. Competition was tough with over 200 of the best players in the world from as far away as South Africa and Australia. The tough competition meant that the Bayside contingent was held out of the winners circle for the first time this season. Dispite the lack of hardware all of the players played some of their best Squash to date. Leading the group was Stuart Akam and Rafik Bhaloo both managing to advance to the ‘Silver” 3rd round in the Under 15 Division. Also in the U15 group was Toby King who reached the ‘Bronze” semi finals while team mate Mark Saunders reached the same spot in the Under 13 group dispite coming down with the flu part way through the tournament. Rounding out the group was Baysides only female representative reaching the ‘Bronze” quarter-finals. Arriving home late Sunday night from snowbound Ontario the entire group was tired but motivated enough to make it out for Bayside’s Christmas tournament finals Monday where Stuart Akam and Sarah Saunders took top honors in the boys and girls divisions.

Bayside Juniors In Full Swing
Bayside Junior Squash Players of all ages and all levels competed in four different events over the past two weekends. Highlighting the results were Rafik Bhaloo winning the Oregon State Junior U15 Championships in Portland, following a win in the consolation round of the U 15 at the Jesters Western Canadian Tournament in Edmonton, Layne Mullard winning the Vancouver Lawn & Tennis U 13 title and the Clubs Division 3 & 4 teams both winning their Vancouver Squash League matches, maintaining their hold on first place overall. Other top three results at Vancouver Lawn included Sydney, and Kirby Delaney, Daniel Szetela, and Brock Edinger. Rounding out the entrants at Van Lawn were Zac Owen, Andrew Parker, Chris Kinsey, Katherine Milligan along with first year players Brett Hinchcliff, and Katie Forsythe. Also traveling to the Jesters in Edmonton were Sarah Saunders, Carly Soparlo, and Rahim Bhaloo, all finishing in the top three in their events along with Mark Saunders, Toby King, Stuart Akam, and Lewis Lees Buckley. Up next for the Bayside Juniors are the Jericho Junior Tournament and the Fraser Valley Open Championships where Bayside will be represented for the first time ever with junior in every Men’s Division. Matt Saunders in the Means A, Lewis Lees Buckley the B, Stuart Akam the C, and Toby King in the D.

Evergreen Junior Event
20 Bayside Junior squash players competed in 2 different events over the weekend, with 5 players finishing in the prizes and 7 just outside the winners circle. Winning their events at the Evergreen Junior event on North Shore were Layne Mullard, and Matt Frost in the U13B consolation, U15B consolation plate events. Finishing in second at Evergreen were, Sarah Saunders, Zac Owen and Remington Hall in the U 19 consolation, U15 novice and U 13B consolation events respectively. Third place finishers included Lewis Lees Buckley in the tough U17 main event and Brock Edinger in the U13B consolation. Other notable results included Rafik Bhaloo finishing 4th in the competitive U 15 main round and Josh Buell also finishing 4th in the U 15B event .Rounding out Baysides contingent at the Evergreen event were Rahim Bhaloo U 19 main event, Stuart Akam, and Toby King,, in the U15 main, Lewis Seimplekamp, and David Lewis in the U15B, Mark Saunders U13 main, Douglas Smith and Andrew Parker in the U13 B and Baysides youngest competitor Alex Lees Buckley competing in the girls U 15.
Meanwhile playing a little closer to home at the River Club No-Frills event , Matt Saunders and Charla O’Neil both advanced to the Consolation finals in the Men’s A and Ladies C/D events respectively, playing alongside Adult Bayside members Peter Casey in the A, Lorne Kwiatkowski in the B and Dave Touchet in the C event. Next up for Bayside is the Jesters Junior Tournament in Edmonton with a club record 8 Junior Players flying up this year.

Halloween Open Results
Akam leads Bayside Juniors at Halloween Open

Last weekend nine Bayside Junior Squash players competed in various adult divisions at the Annual Bentall Athletic Club Halloween Open in Downtown Vancouver. Leading the group was 13 year old Stuart Akam who won the Men’s D division with a close 3-2 win in the final match after cruising through the early rounds without dropping a game. Also competing in the men’s D were Toby King and Rahim Bhaloo, both advancing to the Consolation Semi-Finals, along with Mackenzie Dobbs and Mark Saunders who reached the consolation quarter-finals. Rounding out Bayside's boys contingent were Matt Saunders, Lewis Lees-Buckley and Rafik Bhaloo who all reached the Quarter finals in the Men’s A, B, & C Divisions respectively. Meanwhile the only girl representing Bayside, Sarah Saunders, advanced to the Ladies B semi-finals. Next up for the Bayside Juniors is the Evergreen Junior Tournament on the North Shore where they will be competing with the top Junior Squash Players from BC, Alberta, Washington, and Oregon.
